NORFOLK -- May 14-20 is National Salvation Army Week.
This week, the mobile canteen is stopping at businesses to say thank you for supporting the mission and to give people a chance to learn more about the good work being done.
In 2011, The Salvation Army on southside Hampton Roads served more than 20,000 people, helping them with a variety of services including men's shelter, women's transitional housing, utility payments and food supplements.
Of course, you likely know the Salvation Army best during the Christmas season when volunteers don Santa hats for the Red Kettle Drive, through its thrift stores and the WVEC-TV Angel Tree project, which collects donations of new clothing for children in need.
Each holiday season, more than 32,000 people are helped through the annual Christmas distribution.
Nationally, The Salvation Army served more than 30 million Americans in 2011.'
The week was dedicated to the organization by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1954.
