NORFOLK - The Red Cross is helping a family of four after fire damaged their Norfolk home Thursday.

Firefighters saw smoke and flames coming from the back of the home in the 3300 block of Verdun Ave. as they pulled up around 11:30 a.m.

Officials say no one was home at the time and they found a smoke detector, but it wasn't working.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Fire Department offers a free smoke detector for residents. You can call 664-6616 to schedule someone to install it for you.
