VIRGINIA BEACH - A Tallwood High School student was hit by a pick-up truck Wednesday morning.

It happened at Kempsville Road and Lion's Way at 6:50 a.m., just a few minutes before the school zone flashing lights would activate, reducing the speed limit from 45MPH to 25MPH, said police spokesman MPO Jimmy Barnes.

The preliminary investigation shows the 16-year-old was in the crosswalk when he was struck by the Honda Ridgeline, which was headed north, but the truck had the green light, he added.

The student was being treated Police closed northbound Kempsville Road near Brandon Blvd. for the investigation but reopened it about 8:30 a.m.

Schools spokeswoman Eileen Cox said the student was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Police stated his injuries aren't life threatening and he should be fine.

Cox said classes would go on as scheduled, but because of the traffic issues, teachers would take into account any late arrivals.
