NORFOLK -- Fire in a boy's bathroom forced the evacuation of Norview Middle School in Norfolk Tuesday.

The students were being taken by bus to nearby Norview High School stadium, where they were offered lunch and sent home at normal dismissal time, explained Schools spokeswoman Elizabeth Mather.

She stressed no one was hurt and the move was a precaution.

Officials explained that because students were evacuated, their backpacks and personal belongings, including cellphones, may have been left at the school.

Officials say the school will be open Wednesday and all students will then be able to access their belongings.

Norfolk Fire officials say they got the call around 11:45 a.m. and found the fire in a second floor bathroom. There was a lot of smoke and it was decided to not let anyone back in the buildings, they said.

Crews were working to clear the building of smoke. After that, Mather said the school will prepare the building for school tomorrow, if safe and appropriate.

Officials said all after-school activities were canceled.

The investigation into the fire continues.
