PORTSMOUTH-- Two information sessions are scheduled in Portsmouth and Norfolk relating to the rehabilitation of the Downtown Tunnel.
Full weekend closures for the I-264 west Downtown Tunnel are scheduled to begin August 9 and continue through spring 2014.
Rehabilitation work includes:
Tunnel fireproofing for structural protection
New directional jet fan ventilation system
LED tunnel lighting that provides brighter lighting and uses less energy
Relocation of fire alarms, extinguishers and hydrants for easier accessibility.
Attendees can learn about the fire, life and safety improvements being made to extend the life of the 61-year-old facility; get details on closures related to the rehabilitation work and receive information about alternate routes.
Engineers from Elizabeth River Crossings and SKW Constructors will be on site to answer questions.
The open houses are free to the public.
