BALTIMORE, MD - Chemo hair loss can be as traumatizing as cancer itself, but a handful of breast cancer patients kept much of their hair through use of cold cap systems.

'It reduces blood flow to the scalp so that damaging chemicals cannot reach the hair follicles,' explains Dr. Young Lee, chief of oncology, MedStar Harbor Hospital.

They're not FDA approved, but one cancer doctor is on a mission to change that.

Dr. Hope Rugo is launching a clinical trial to test Sweden's dignicap on 100 breast cancer patients. It circulates coolant from the machine to the cap. She says in a pilot study of 20 women, most kept at least half their hair.

The American Cancer Society wants to know about its effectiveness and safety.
