PORTSMOUTH-Thursday night, some people living on Rutter Street in Portsmouth heard a loud popping noise and thought a car had backfired. Turns it, the sound was gunfire.

99-year old Ruth Holman also heard someone cry out.

'This person was hollering, hollering, hollering, he wasn't saying help, but I hear him say mama,' she said, 'so I cracked this door and when I cracked the door something went off like a gun and I hurried and shut the door back and all that noise.'

Police say they found a 45-year-old man wounded in the hallway of the duplex when they got to the scene around 6:00 p.m.

He was taken to the hospital for treatment of a gunshot to his stomach, according to investigators.

Officials say there is no motive or suspects at this time.
