NORFOLK -- Students at Old Dominion University were emailed a safety alert after an attempted robbery in a school parking lot.

ODUpolice believe the incident happened just after 1:30 a.m. on Saturday in Lot 44 located at 49th Street and Powhatan Avenue.

The victim told campus police that he was walking through the parking lot when he noticed three men get out of a car. One of the men allegedly approached the victim and hit him in the face, initiating a fight. The other two males are accused of pinning the victim to the ground while trying to remove a wallet from his pocket.

After a struggle with the victim, the three suspects left in the car without taking anything. He suffered minor injuries and refused medical treatment. The university has not identified the victim and are not confirming if he was student at ODU.

The suspects are described as being at least 6 feet tall and in their 20's. The men were all wearing dark colored jeans and t-shirts. The car the suspects were in is described as a black two door Hyundai Elantra.

The university is advising students and staff to take safety precautions such as walking in well-lit areas and to consider using the Safe Ride van service or school escort service by calling (757) 683-3477.
