ELIZABETH CITY -- The North Carolina State Highway Patrol is facing a significant shortage of troopers across the state.

Locally, in the northeastern corner of the state, the NCSHP is short 18 troopers, and officials says it's a problem that's expected to get worse before it gets better.

'Across the Highway Patrol, we have approximately 200 troopers that we're short and that number continues to grow,' said spokesman First Sergeant Jeff Gordon.

According to Gordon, it's not unusual to have one trooper patrol one or two counties by themselves.

Tuesday at 6, find out what state lawmakers are doing to solve the trooper shortage and why it's so hard to increase the Highway Patrol's manpower.
