5/27 UPDATE: The bond hearing for Emily Defries was removed from the docket, said Commonswealth's Attorney spokeswoman Amanda Howie. A preliminary hearing is now set for July 23.
NORFOLK -- A Norfolk woman has been charged following the death of her 20-month-old step-daughter.
Police charged 24-year-old Emily Defries of Norfolk with second degree murder Monday.
According to police, Defries was babysitting the victim and two other children on May 18. Defries told investigators that she discovered the victim at the bottom of the steps and then called 911 around 5:30 p.m. Medics responded to the incident and transported the victim to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at approximately 6:10 p.m.
Defries told investigators she periodically checked on the victim, who had been sleeping upstairs.
The Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was homicide by blunt force trauma.
A Navy spokesperson says Defries is a former sailor aboard the USS George H.W. Bush until February 2012. More information here.
Defries is currently being held without bond at the Norfolk City Jail. She is due in court at 9 a.m. Wednesday.
The investigation continues.
