NORFOLK--Several events were held to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. across Hampton Roads Monday.

The federal holiday celebrates the life of the civil rights leader, who would have turned 84 last week, and coincides with the National Day of Service.

At Calvary Baptist Church, more than one hundred volunteers came to make care packages for soldiers and bags for seniors at assisted living facilities.

Nicholas Raspos is a sailor who says it felt great to put together care packages for other members of the military since he knows how it feels to get one.

Will Arce mentored a young man by teaching him how to plant a tree.

Children also took part in the day and could feel the message sinking in. 'If you treat people as you want to be treated, you will surround yourself with good neighbors,' read one first grader.
