SUFFOLK-- Nearly 1500 chickens died Friday morning in a fire at a Suffolk poultry farm.

Crews responded to a structure fire this morning in a rural area located off Route 58.

Police say the owner of the farm reported the fire in the rear of one of three structures that houses the animals. Each structure houses about 21,800 chickens.

Firefighters were able to quickly extinguish the fire limiting the loss of fowl.

A truck from Perdue Farms was called in to evaluate the situation and to remove the remaining chickens from the building.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.
