VA BEACH - A Va. Beach lawmaker is promising to keep a close eye on the Virginia Department of Transportation following the pothole mess on I-264 Friday.

State Sen. Jeff McWaters (R-8th District) says he will hold conference calls with VDOT every week to make sure they're making progress on road work in the area.

Dozens of cars got flat tires and were forced off the Interstate after heavy rain created crater-like potholes on the eastbound lanes in Norfolk.

'I won't go so far to say we aren't confident in the department,' said McWaters. 'This is just a necessary step.'

VDOT contracts pothole maintenance work to TME Enterprises, a company that has been under scrutiny following Friday's emergency repairs.

When asked if contracting this work is in the best interest of Hampton Roads drivers, McWaters said, 'It's something we can look into.'
