PORTSMOUTH -- Wildlife in Portsmouth had to be captured and cleaned Wednesday, following a fuel spill.

Portsmouth fire spokesperson Jim Hoffler said diesel fuel from a commercial truck that was damaged Tuesday night leaked through a storm water drain into Lake Collins.

Wednesday morning someone noticed the odor of diesel fuel at the Collinswood Lake Apartments.

Portsmouth fire, a HazMat team, Animal Control and an animal rescue group responded to the scene in the 300 block of Navajo Trail where several Canada geese had to be rescued.

Hoffler said the HazMat team used containment booms to isolate the fuel draining into the lake and prevent the fuel from reaching the Elizabeth River.

The incident is still under investigation.
