NORFOLK -- The Wards Corner neighborhood of Norfolk is undergoing a revitalization.

In March 2012, City Council unveiled plans for a revamped shopping center to attract new business. Harris Teeter opened in February and a Starbucks and several other stories committed to locating in the area.

Now a Sam's Club may call the area home.

City Council was briefed Tuesday night on the project which promises to bring 180 new jobs and $800,000 in annual tax revenue to Norfolk.

It would open in the old Kmart location at Tidewater Drive and E. Little Creek Road near Wards Corner but there's no time frame for the opening. Officials say the old building would be razed and a 135,000-square-foot warehouse would be built.

Spokeswoman Lori Crouch told WVEC.com this is a private deal and City Council will have to vote on special exceptions the developer might want.

This would be the first Sam's Club in Norfolk.
