HAMPTON -- A Freon leak from an air conditioning unit led to the evacuation of a four-story extended stay facility in Hampton Thursday.

Fire crews responded to the 2100 block of West Mercury Blvd. around noon.

The leak occurred in a second-floor work room.

According to Captain Jeffrey Pereira, Freon is an asphyxiate and is capable of displacing oxygen in the air.

Hazardous materials team members assisted with determining air quality, oxygen levels, and ventilation of the facility.

One person was medically assessed but was not transported from the scene.

Residents are now allowed to re-enter the residential facility.
