VIRGINIA BEACH -- Extreme heat like Hampton Roads is feeling this week can be dangerous.

13News Meteorologist Craig Moeller says an Excessive Heat Watch will be in effect Thursday through Saturday. Afternoon heat index values will range between 105-110 .

The Va. Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation can help provide air conditioning to people with health problems that can be helped by AC. The Emergency Home Repair Program makes repairs or modifications to remove health or safety hazards more affordable for homeowners through a one-time-only grant.

Now through September 30, eligible households with a written statement from a licensed physician stating that air conditioning is medically required for a household member, may have an air conditioning system installed where feasible, or defective equipment replaced under the program.

Other eligible activities include replacing defective heating equipment in the winter; correcting electrical, gas and plumbing hazards; correcting defective roof/ceiling assemblies in life-threatening situations; and making accessibility and usability modifications.

The program is not intended for making routine maintenance repairs to systems or equipment.
