JAMES CITY CO. - Fire damaged a home in James City County and the Red Cross is helping the person who lived there.

Crews say smoke and flames were rising from the home as they arrived at 9180 Barnes Road around 10:00 a.m. Thursday.

They had the fire under control in about 20 minutes, said District Chief Robert Ryalls, and now they're trying to determine how it started.

The American Red Cross, Coastal Virginia Region in Hampton is helping the person who lived there.

It's the latest fire the Red Cross says it's responded to since Wednesday afternoon. Assistance to families in Toano and Newport News has included food, clothing and a place to stay, officials said.

Donations help the American Red Cross help victims in Hampton Roads, whether they've suffered losses from fires or natural diasters.
