VIRGINIA BEACH -- At the Fire Training Center Thursday, Virginia Beach firefighters demonstrated the technique they used Wednesday morning when they entered a burning home on Millbrook Court.

'We call it a 'VES' or Vent - Enter - Search. We do it when someone tells us there are people inside,' said Station 3 Capt. Joe Barakey.

Jade Alexis Mellenkamp, 18, who was pulled from the burning home, died at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Wednesday evening from her injuries.

The firefighters say they have to separate work from emotion, especially anytime a fatality occurs.

Master Firefighter Justin Moss choked up when he spoke.

'I was the one who pulled Jade Mellenkamp out and we did all we could on the way to the hospital,' Moss said.

This loss marks the sixth fire-related death in Virginia Beach in 2013.
