SUFFOLK Two wildfires are burning at the Dismal Swamp Refuge and officials say they were started by lightning.

The fires were discovered Thursday evening. They're located southwest of Lake Drummond off Interior Ditch Road.

Friday afternoon, officials estimated the larger of the two fires to be at about 15 acres and was producing some visible smoke. The smaller one affected just one tree.

Two bulldozers and a helicopter are helping to battle the fires. Additional personnel and equipment are expected to arrive over the next few days, according to the city of Suffolk.

As a result of the fires, Railroad Ditch Road and trail will be closed until further notice and the narrated bus tour to Lake Drummond scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 6 has been cancelled. The next tour will be Saturday, Aug. 13.
