NORFOLK- Part of busy Granby Street in Norfolk was shut down for several hours Friday morning because of an accident.

Authorities say a vehicle going north hit a power pole near Willow Wood Drive around 4:45 a.m., knocking down power lines and causing other damage.

Norfolk Police officers were blocking the roadway and directing traffic in the Belvedere neighborhood.

Sgt. Major Jeff Garris told WVEC.com that one lane northbound has reopened and the entire roadway was reopened by 11am. They were closed so crews can replace the pole, he explained.

The Dominion Virginia Power Website says the accident knocked out power to 84 customers.

Alternate routes were Tidewater Drive, Colley Avenue and Hampton Blvd.

The accident also affectedHRT bus routes 1 and 961. HRT says detours are in place.

Meantime, the man who was driving the car was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Garris said charges are pending.
