NORFOLK-Due to the government shutdown, the Navy suspended tours of Naval Station Norfolk Monday.

That is bad news for a charter company in Hampton. Tidewater Tours and Charter has been in business for more than 20 years. The company operations manager said Tuesday that the family-owned business may have to close if shutdown doesn't end soon.

In a press release, Navy spokesman Terri Davis wrote, 'By law in the event of a lapse in appropriations, the Department of Defense can only conduct activities designed to protect safety of life and property; support specific military operations approved by the Secretary of Defense; maintain police, fire, and emergency medical protection; and activities labeled 'excepted activities.'

Davis said tours are suspended until further notice.
