ISLE OF WIGHT -- Ice roads caused 40 vehicle crashes between 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Thursday in Isle of Wight.

Officials say some accidents involved multiple vehicles while others involved single cars or trucks sliding into ditches or off the roads.

Most accidents were relatively minor. However, two victims were taken to the hospital after their vehicles crashed on Rt. 258 near Smithfield Glass.

Officials say 14 Sheriff's units worked the many crashes with much-needed assistance from the Virginia State Police, Smithfield Police Department and Windsor Police Department.
