HAMPTON- Hundreds of sailors will be hard at work in Hampton and Newport News Friday, volunteering to help in schools and doing community service.

It's part of USS Abraham Lincoln's community service day.

In Hampton, sailors will plant 1,000 perennials at Honor Park in downtown. The park contains memorials that honor officers killed in the line of duty and Hampton residents who died in service to this country. They'll also be helping out at the Hampton Senior Center.

In Newport News, sailors will be at 10 schools, helping with projects ranging from reading to students to beautifying courtyards to tutoring and mentoring students.

Newport News Public Schools Projects:
Epes Elementary School
Six sailors will read to students in kindergarten - second grade; and third- fifth grade students will read to the sailors from books they have written themselves

Magruder Primary School
Eight to 10 sailors will read to students in the kindergarten and first grade classes and talk to them about their military career

Newsome Park Elementary School
More than 100 volunteers will assist with cleaning court yards; reading to students and assisting teachers in classrooms

Jenkins Elementary School
More than 20 volunteer sailors will greet students as they arrive in the morning (school begins at 8:20 a.m.); assist teachers in classrooms; and serve as career speakers in classrooms

Palmer Elementary School
Sailors will read to and interact with students

Saunders Elementary School
Sailors will read to and interact with students

Yates Elementary School
10 volunteer sailors will read to students in kindergarten and first grade classes and serve as class speakers from 8:30 to 11 a.m.

Crittenden Middle School
15 sailors will read to special education students, help during 6th grade lunch and talk with students about their careers; join students on the morning show; help in the courtyard (if weather permits) and serve as a guest speaker in classes

Dozier Middle School
15 to 20 sailors will assist students in classrooms and in small groups, mentor students, assist and eat with students in the cafeteria during lunch

Passage Middle School
About 20 sailors will assist students in classrooms and in small groups, mentor students, assist and eat with students in the cafeteria during lunch and assist with grounds cleanup
