CHESAPEAKE -- Police suspect a medical emergency may have played a role in an single-vehicle accident that left one person dead Sunday.

According to police, 59-year-old David Melick of Chesapeake was killed when the car he was driving left the road and struck a pole at Battlefield Boulevard and Saint Brides Road.

Melick was transported to Chesapeake Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police say four other passengers, all family members, were transported to the hospital. Three remain in the hospital. Their conditions are unknown.

The accident remains under investigation.
