HAMPTON The Phoebus High School football team is on warning for the next three years after eight players took articles belonging to the Battlefield High School team on December 11, 2010, the Va. High School League has decided.

The Phantoms are the defending Division 5 State Champions

The VHSL says a warning is 'an official notice that an inexcusable, unethical or unsportsmanlike action, has occurred, is a matter of record, and that such an action must not be repeated.'

The school system launched an investigation after the allegations arose, ending with eight players getting immediate multiple-day suspensions and banning those players from playing or being on the sidelines for the first three consecutive regular season games during the 2011-2012 football season.

That report was turned over to the League for review.

Hampton Schools Superintendent Dr. Linda Shifflette said, 'The Hampton school division in no way condones such acts. We would ask that our community not let this incident, which involved the careless and embarrassing actions of a few players, taint the wonderful programs we have at Phoebus High School and throughout our entire division.'
