NEWPORT NEWS I-64 westbound at Denbigh Boulevard was closed for about four and a half hours after an accident involving a tractor trailer.

The accident happened about 12:20 p.m. on Wednesday.

State police spokesperson Sgt. Michelle Anaya said that Jessica Aguero, 22, of Langley hit her brakes to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of her. That caused her car to skid out of control and it was struck by a tractor trailer.

30-year old Douglas Hartwill of Richmond was driving the truck.

Aguero was flown to Senatara Norfolk General Hospital and was in critical condition Wednesday evening.

The investigation continues and charges are pending. Police say alcohol was not involved.

The westbound lanes of I-64 reopened about 4:30 p.m. I-64 eastbound was closed earlier and traffic was diverted to Jefferson Avenue.
