VIRGINIA BEACH About 300 Christmas trees were given to military troops in the Hampton Roads area on Wednesday.

It's through a program called Trees for Troops which is sponsored by the Christmas SPIRIT Foundation and FedEx. This year, they plan to deliver more than 16,000 of the farm-grown trees to various states and even ship 300 trees to troops in the Middle East.

Wednesday, Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek distributed about 300 of the Christmas trees to military families.

For Navy fire controlman second class Lebert Lewis, Junior, it was all for his six children.

'Every bit helps,' he said in appreciation. 'Diapers are expensive, clothing is expensive, housing everybody's expensive, Christmas presents - trying to get as close to what they want. So this little bit helps us a lot. It's greatly appreciated.'

Over the past seven years, Christmas tree growers from across the U.S. have provided 84,000 fresh cut Christmas Trees.

The program is open to all branches, active duty, retirees, and dependents.
