VIRGINIA BEACH-- Ateacher accused of spanking a student with a belt was denied bond Friday.

Michael Shanklin Jr. remains in the Va. Beach City Jail charged with sexual abuse of a minor and abduction, Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Macie Pridgen told WVEC.com.

Police say Shanklin, a math teacher, felt the Landstown High School student needed to be punished for not completing an assignment.

She had stayed after school on January 18 for a tutoring lesson, according to police.

Shanklin is on administrative leave without pay, Schools spokeswoman Nancy Soscia told WVEC.com.
