NORFOLK (AP) -- The USS Elrod has helped seize cocaine in the western Caribbean Sea worth more than $360 million.
The Navy says the Norfolk-based frigate helped recover 89 bales of cocaine last Friday. The drugs were tossed overboard from two 40-foot boats that were evading authorities.
A Coast Guard team that was on board as well as authorities from Panama joined Elrod in the effort.
The Navy says the ship recovered 89 bales of cocaine weighing more than 4,800 pounds.
This seizure follows a March 22 operation in which the Elrod confiscated 1,000 pounds of cocaine. The ship is participating in Operation Martillo, a multinational effort that targets drug-trafficking routes in coastal waters along the Central American isthmus.
