VIRGINIA BEACH - A Va. Beach man was sentenced to 40 years in prison for killing his girlfriend's young son while babysitting.
Circuit Court Judge A. Bonwill Shockley sentenced Alvin Gatewood Monday.
Gatewood was convicted of 2nd degree murder and child abuse/neglect for the November 2011 death of 19-month-old Kimauri Williams, said Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Macie Pridgen.
According to Pridgen, in the hours leading up to his death, Kimauri was vomiting, crying, and could not stand up without being supported. Neither Alvin Gatewood nor Kimauri's mother, Shaniqua Jones, sought medical treatment for him during this time.
Pridgen reported that despite the fact that Kimauri was not breathing and his body was limp, Gatewood and Jones parked their car, casually strolled into the hospital and filled out paperwork. Neither Gatewood nor Jones yelled for help or indicated to the hospital staff that the baby needed emergency care.
Medical authorities said Kimauri died of blunt force trauma to his abdomen and head. When the little boy got to the hospital, his body was covered in fingernail cuts, bruises and bite marks, likely received over a longer-term period of abuse, culminating with a more recent blow so severe it ruptured his liver and caused him to bleed to death internally, they stated.
A jury found Jones guilty of second degree felony murder and child abuse/neglect. She will be sentenced on Oct. 21, 2013.
