VIRGINIA BEACH -- Audio recordings from the crash of a malfunctioning F/A-18D Hornet that took place in April, 2012 reveal the calm, controlled response of a team of air traffic controllers amid the maelstrom of a $29 million fighter jet bursting into flames.

The jet crashed into a courtyard at Mayfair Mews apartments off Birdneck Road at about 12:05 p.m. the Friday before Easter. A 3-alarm fire followed. Because no one in the jet or on the ground died during the incident, people often refer to it as 'The Black Friday Miracle.'

The Virginian-Pilot obtained more than 4 hours of audio recordings from that day through the Freedom of Information Act. Pilot reporter Mike Hixenbaugh breaks things down in his article.
