VIRGINIA BEACH -- Occupants inside a condo were able to escape a fire that started in the kitchen of a home on Adkins Arch Drive.

Shortly after 10:45 am on Sunday, emergency dispatchers received reports a fire in the 400 block of Adkins Arch Drive. Fire crews were on the scene in a few minutes and had the fire out around 11:15 am.

Battalion Chief Patrick Seigh confirms that three people were inside the home during the fire. They were able to exit the home before crews arrived. One of them was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene. No other injuries were reported.

Firefighters were able to rescue two cats and a dog from the home.

Investigators believe the fire was accidental and was caused by cooking.

At this time the home will need repairs before residents will be able to return home.
