NEWPORT NEWS -- A 16-year-old Newport News student is in juvenile detention after police say he threatened to shoot up his school and kill an employee.

Newport News police say the student made the threat Tuesday while talking with the employee at New Horizons Regional Education Center on Woodside Lane.

The student has been charged with making a death threat and threatening to harm a staff member.

There's no word why the student allegedly made the threats.

New Horizons is not part of the Newport News Public School system.
