CHESAPEAKE -- Police spent hours Monday night looking for the person who robbed the Exxon station at 1102 South Military Highway, not far from Providence Road.

Officer Ravi Sheth told 13News Now the person -- believed to be 18 to 20 years old -- walked into the convenience store at the station at about 7:15 p.m. He had a silver handgun.

After robbing the business, he started to leave. There was gunfire.

Sheth could not say who inside the store fired. Officers initially believed the robber was hit. Later, investigators weren't sure that was the case.

Sheth said the person ran off and into a mobile home park, located behind the store. The search for the robber included members of Chesapeake Police Department's K-9 Unit, as well as people from Virginia Beach Police Department's K-9 Unit. A police helicopter also assisted.

Officers did not find the person. They thought he got into a car at some point.

Detective Misty Holley with Portsmouth Police Department said that someone with a gunshot wound showed up at Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth at 7:36 p.m.

A Chesapeake detective headed over there to see if that person was connected to the robbery of the gas station.

Besides the age range of 18 to 20 years old, police said the person who robbed the Exxon was black and that he wore a dark gray hoodie, black athletic pants with a white stripe down the legs, and a cap that had 'Kroger' on it.

Anyone with information about the robbery is encouraged to call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.

Sheth pointed out that someone robbed the Exxon station in June.
