VIRGINIA BEACH -- A motorcyclist died after he slammed into the back of a car on General Booth Boulevard in Virginia Beach, authorities said.

According to police, an off-duty officer was traveling north near the KOA campground around 2 a.m. on Friday and slowed down after seeing on-duty officers investigating a disturbance along the south-bound lanes.

'He noticed a vehicle in his rear view mirror approaching at a high rate of speed. In an attempt to avoid a collision, the off-duty officer attempted to move into the left turn lane. At which time the Saab was struck from behind by a 1984 Honda motorcycle,' officials wrote in a press release Monday.

A nearby police officer rendered aid to the motorcyclist. He was transported to the hospital and died on Sunday.

Alcohol is a factor in this accident with speed believed to be a contributing factor, according to police.

The motorcyclist has been identified as 28-year-old Daniel J. Lewis of Virginia Beach.

The crash remains under investigation.
