NORFOLK -- People who own animals are being urged to bring them indoors during these freezing nights.

Animals left outside in the cold without shelter and bedding can suffer from frostbite or even die, according to Norfolk-based People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

PETA is again giving away free straw for bedding to shelter pets from the cold.

The straw is available for Peninsula residents beginning Saturday at noon until it's gone from the parking lot of Hampton Veterinary Clinic, 607 Aberdeen Road.

It's also available at the PETA building at 501 Front Street in Norfolk.

'We strongly encourage people to allow their dogs and other animals indoors to protect the animals' health and safety, reports of shivering dogs and last-minute calls for help have prompted this and past straw giveaways,' said spokesman David Perle.
