NEWPORT NEWS-A man with a gun robbed a Newport News business Tuesday night and then forced the employees and a customer into a back bathroom so he could escape.

He went into Family Dollar at 11712 Jefferson Avenue around 9:40 p.m., just before closing time.

He told the clerks to be quiet and everything would be okay, said police spokesman Harold Eley. After getting money from the safe, drop boxes and cash registers.

Surveillance camera images show the robber, who is 5'7' tall, 35-40 years old and had on a light tan cap, a black 'fuzzy' fake beard, and all black clothing and footwear.

Investigators say a witness reported seeing a man bicycling fast and then turning south on Jefferson Avenue just before police arrived. He was on a BMX-style black bike.

If you know who the man is or know anything about the robbery, call Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP.
