VIRGINIA BEACH -- A Va. Beach man will stay in jail as he faces charges in the death of his 14-month-old daughter.

Bond was denied Tuesday for 24-year-old Marcus Dewayne Brantley, Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Macie Pridgen told WVEC.com.

Police say Melanie Brantley died several days after being taken to the hospital with a head injury on August 15.

They say Mr. Brantley told authorities she fell and hit her head while playing, so he put ice on it and placed her in her crib. When he checked on her later, she was unresponsive and that's when he called for help, they added.

Mr. Brantley, who lives on Aylesbury Drive, was arrested August 18 on a charge of felony child neglect.

A neighbor, Gary Lachwa, says he had seen Brantley with his daughter before.

'The child was beginning to walk. At one point, they were just sitting underneath a tree and the kid was just walking around,' he recalled.

'It's a tragedy, It's sad. You'd never want to wish that on anybody, ever,' he added
