VIRGINIA BEACH - Fire damaged a popular Va. Beach restaurant early Wednesday, closing a busy intersection.

Crews arrived at Red Lobster on Independence Blvd. around 5:15 a.m. after someone reported seeing an awning on fire.

Firefighters went inside and found fire in the ceiling, said spokesman Ken Pravitz.

It took about 15 minutes to get the fire under control.

The intersection of N. Independence Blvd. and Pembroke Blvd. was closed so crews could get to the scene.

The restaurant was closed for the day and reopened Thursday, said spokesman Mike Bernstein.
