JAMES CITY COUNTY -- Police said 42-year-old Jeffrey Lamar Wynne of Williamsburg died Saturday, a day after his car crashed into a tree stump and caught fire.

Officers believe Wynne lost control of his car in the 8300 block of Pocahontas Trail at about 11:45 p.m. Friday.

Wynne, who was heading east, ran off the right side of the roadway. Policed said he over-corrected, crossed the oncoming lanes, then went off the left side of Pocahontas Trail. The car hit a tree stump near Howard Drive and caught fire. Someone saw what happened and pulled Wynne from the burning car.

He died at Riverside Regional Medical Center in Newport News Saturday at 5:52 p.m.

Investigators don't think Wynne was wearing a seat belt. They believe alcohol played a role in the crash.
