NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News man was struck and killed while walking across Mercury Boulevard Monday night.
Police say 63-year-old Peter Cornetta was hit around 10 p.m. by a 1998 Ford Windstar traveling eastbound on Mercury Boulevard.
Police say the 24-year-old driver of the Windstar was traveling in center lane and swerved when the vehicle in front of him applied brakes quickly. The driver said he did not see Cornetta.
Cornetta was transported to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
Speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
According to police, Cornetta was not crossing at an intersection and was wearing dark clothing.
The Newport News Police Crash Reconstruction Team is investigating the crash and said no charges are pending against the driver.
