NEWPORT NEWS -- Two women were wounded after a shooting near 23rd Street and Roanoke Avenue.

A spokesman for the police department said that officers were alerted to reports of a shooting just before 3:00 a.m. on Saturday.

When officers arrived on scene they located a 26-year-old Newport News woman and a 29-year-old woman from Hampton.

The younger woman suffered a wound to her thigh and the 29-year-old has injuries to her buttocks and shoulder.

Both victims were transported to a hospital with injuries considered to be non-life threatening.

The women told police they were driving near 22nd Street and Roanoake Avenue when their car was hit by bullets.

In addition to the car being damaged a nearby home was also struck by gunfire.

The alleged suspect was seen leaving the area in a silver or gray sedan, but no other details were released.
