HAMPTON ROADS--If you felt a strange rattling or boom around 7:15 Tuesday evening, you were not alone.

Callers to 13News and emails sent to WVEC.com said the ground shook for several seconds and was felt by people in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake and even the Eastern Shore.

24-year-old Patrick Daugherty, who lives at Linkhorn Bay Apartments in Va. Beach, wrote that about two dozen people were outside wondering what happened and asking each other about the incident.

'I heard a deep low pitched boom while the apartment building shook for a split second violently as if someone was thrown into the wall in a neighboring apartment,' he wrote.

The Accomack Co. Sheriff's office said deputy heard what he described as a sonic boom around 7:00 p.m.

Bob Schultz, who lives in the Great Bridge area of Chesapeake, wrote that his house shook around 7:15 p.m.

Three calls reporting a loud boom were made to the Virginia Beach 911 center around 7:20 p.m. 'To my knowledge, no one was able to determine the cause of the sound. The fire department checked with the US Geological Survey and there was no seismic activity,' city spokesman Marc Davis told WVEC.com.

13News was told the same thing Tuesday night by officials with the US Geological Survey.

Area military bases contacted indicated they weren't doing any special exercises Tuesday night.

A spokeswoman at Oceana Naval Air Station says a sonic boom from the base wouldn't be heard as far away as Suffolk.

A NASA spokesman says there wasn't any rocket activity at the Wallops Island facility that could cause such a noise.

National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Rusnak says there wasn't any severe weather at the time.

Some WVEC.com readers have possible answers. A woman in Poquoson writes that a loud boom shook her home about 10 years ago.

'It was determined that a stray jet from Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland had a sonic boom near us,' she says.

Another reader suggests that underground gas explosions could be to blame.
