HAMPTON -- A lot of people have never spent 4th of July on the beach of Fort Monroe, but this year, it's expected to be packed.

The fort recently transitioned and is no longer an Army base.

Outlook Beach overlooks the Chesapeake Beach in Hampton. The access to it at Fort Monroe is easier to get to now that the military has handed over management. Outlook Beach is small with no fancy amenities, but some say it's the best.

'You come out here, you don't have to worry about all of the ruckus and everything like that,' said Steve Bontempo. 'Sit down and enjoy it. Bring your radio out there your sodas and still enjoy the same thing you know.'

Vicky Shankle is from Isle of Wight County and loves the beach at Fort Monroe.

'Buckroe is just so crowded and Virginia Beach is too far. You've got all that traffic to deal with,' Shankle said.
