PORTSMOUTH - Police have charged a man with robbing a Portsmouth bank earlier this week. The crime sent the bomb squad to investigate.

They say 52-year-old Carl Odell Varner, Jr. went into SunTrust at 4016 Victory Blvd. around 9:20 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30 and implied he had an explosive device with him.

After getting money, he left, leaving leaving the object inside, according to investigators. They determined the item was not explosive.

Varner was arrested Thursday as he rode his bike on Greenwood Road, said Det. Jan Clark. He's charged with two counts of robbery and threatening to bomb a building.
