VIRGINIA BEACH -- Investigators believe the man killed in a Virginia Beach house fire started the fire himself.
54-year-old Bryan M. Herzog and a woman lived in the Nanney's Creek home.
She awoke to find fire in her bedroom around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. She escaped through a window and ran to a neighbor's house for help.
During the firefight, crews found Herzog on the hallway floor and contacted homicide investigators.
Investigators determined Herzog had poureding a flammable liquid throughout the home and, as the fire spread, he didn't escape.
Herzog suffered smoke inhalation and burns from the fire, according to the medical examiner, and toxicology tests are being done to determine what caused his death.
