NORFOLK-Norfolk Police spent several hours searching an apartment complex for a shooting suspect, but they didn't find him.

Police, special operations team and hostage negotiators were called to the 300 block of Brambleton Avenue, near Scope, after a man was shot on the playground of the complex around 3:00 a.m.

Officer Chris Amos says the victim told officers he saw the gunman run into a nearby apartment, so policeblocked off Brambleton between Church St. and St. Pauls Blvd. as they searched for the suspect.

At 7:00 a.m., police reopened the street and said the apartment they'd been watching was empty.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

The motive for the shooting is under investigation.
