NEWPORT NEWS -- A Newport News school bus hit a low-hanging wire Tuesday.

According to Newport News Police spokesperson Lou Thurston, a 17-year-old hit a utility pole at Warwick Blvd and Menchville Road around 3 p.m., causing the wire to hang over the road.

A school bus from Jenkins Elementary with 31 kids aboard was traveling in the opposite direction when it struck the wire, Thurston said.

Another bus was brought to the scene to transport the kids home.

No children were hurt in the incident.

The teen driving the car was issued a summons for wreckless driving, authorities said.
