VIRGINIA BEACH -- Two adults and a nine-year-old child were rescued from the second floor of their home as smoke filled their Virginia Beach home early Friday.

Firefighters were called to a townhouse at 5800 West Hastings Court around 2:30 a.m.

The family was on the second floor when smoke filled the first floor, so they couldn't escape through the door.

Firefighters used ladders to reach the family and get them to safety. The family was treated for smoke inhalation; one of the adults was taken to the hospital.

Residents in the same building were evacuated as a precaution.

Battalion Chief Amy Valdez said the fire was contained to a closet, where the water heater is located, on the first floor. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
